It's often only when we're faced with a crisis that we truly contemplate certain aspects of life. I remember one such moment on my birthday eleven years ago. I took a day off for a medical checkup, which included an ultrasound of my stomach. The doctor discovered a mass near my uterus. Confused, I asked what she meant. She explained that a mass could be a tumor, but she couldn't determine whether it was benign or malignant. I underwent further tests to find out. As I awaited the results, it felt like my world was crumbling. Suddenly, everything seemed to slow down. Questions raced through my mind: What if it's malignant? Do I only have three months left? Have I done enough for my family, friends, and community? Sadly, at that time the only answer I could come up with was that I'd been consumed by work since graduating from university.
Have you ever considered how people will remember you after you're gone? What kind of legacy would you like to leave for your children, family, or community? What testimony would you hope to hear from your friends, children, or grandchildren on your 80th birthday? Even if that seems too far away, for those still in their prime, what legacy would you like to leave at your last workplace before moving on to new opportunities?
Fortunately, my test result turned out all good, nothing that need to be worried about. From that moment, I changed my life goals right away, and I am happy I realised it before all are too late.
